The Saudi Stem cell Donor Registry follows the high standards and precautions in the best interest of both the donors and recipients. In addition to the general guidelines, donations are only accepted from healthy individuals who do not have any of the following diseases:
- History of joint or bone diseases
- Moderate to severe arthritis, especially of the spine.
- Chronic back pain requiring ongoing treatment.
- History of back surgery within last 2 years.
- Placement of rods or pins for scoliosis of the back.
- History of a hip or pelvic fracture and/or repair.
- Autoimmune disorder, including the following:
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Fibromyalgia
- Multiple sclerosis
- Psoriasis
- Vitiligo
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
- Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
- Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
- Sjogren’s syndrome
- Iritis / Episcleritis
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Raynaud’s phenomenon
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Cardiac diseases and risk factors for cardiac diseases
- Most of cardiac diseases, except: congenital defects surgically corrected in childhood, mitral valve prolapse (MVP) that is well controlled, or successful cardiac ablation.
- Uncontrolled hypertension.
- Uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus or those requiring insulin therapy
- Diabetes Mellitus with related complications such as kidney, heart, nerve or eye disease.
- History of neurologic or mental disorders
- History of stroke or brain hemorrhage.
- Epilepsy except well-controlled epilepsy and have had no seizures in the past year will be accepted as a donor.
- Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or delusional disorder.
- Uncontrolled depressive disorders.
- History of chemical drug dependency.
- Diseases of the lungs
- If you have asthma requiring regular/ daily use of oral (pill) steroids, you will not be allowed to register.
- Chronic obstructive airway disease.
- Sleep apnea.
- Cystic fibrosis.
- Blood disorders:
- Bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or Von Willbrand’s disease.
- History of blood clot requiring anticoagulant therapy.
- Aplastic anemia.
- Blood malignancy.
- Post bone marrow transplant.
- Kidney problems
- Chronic kidney problems – such as polycystic kidney disease or glomerulonephritis.
- Chronic kidney disease or failure.
- History of kidney removal due to disease.
- Post kidney transplant.
- Malaria and other tropical diseases
- Syphilis
- History of Tuberculosis within the last 2 years
- Creutzfeld- Jacobs diseases in the donor or in the family
- History of treated or active cancer
- AIDS
- Inf. Mononucleosis, brucellosis, tularemia, toxoplasmosis
- Liver disease and Hepatitis:
- History of serious liver disease such hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cirrhosis or Wilson’s disease.
- Been told you had a positive confirmatory test for hepatitis B or C.
- Been told you are a carrier of hepatitis B or C (also known as a “chronic” infection).
- History of hepatitis or yellow jaundice after age 10 without a known cause.
- Post liver transplant.
